DARYL THETFORD

Daryl Thetford is an accomplished artist known for his unique and captivating creations that traverse the realms of graphic, modern, pop, and contemporary art. The debate over the categorization of his work reflects the innovative nature of his artistic process, which has been coined as photo collage, digital art, and digital mixed media.

Thetford's artistic journey commences with the careful selection of a single, original photographic image, which becomes the foundation for a meticulous process of digital layering and combining. This intricate method involves incorporating dozens of additional original photographs, resulting in visually stunning compositions. The entire process demands a considerable investment of time, with each piece taking an average of 40 hours to complete.

The thematic range of Thetford's work is vast, ranging from culturally familiar subjects such as bikes, cowboys, guitars, and cityscapes to more abstract series that delve into profound themes like man's inner struggle with modern society or the human sense of isolation amid the noise of the contemporary world.

Taking his art to another dimension, Thetford transforms his digital creations into one-of-a-kind mixed-media paintings. Utilizing torn and weathered handmade paper, various artist mediums, and acrylic paint, he breathes life into his printed images, creating pieces that are not only visually striking but also rich in texture and depth.

Currently residing in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Daryl Thetford shares his life with his wife, Dana Shavin, a writer and artist. Together, they find joy in exploring new places, savoring exquisite cuisine, appreciating great art, and cherishing the company of good friends.

Thetford's artistic prowess has garnered recognition through solo and group exhibitions in esteemed museums and galleries across the United States. His works have graced institutions such as the Ormond Museum of Art, the Art Museum of the University of Memphis, the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Alexandria Museum of Art, and the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles. His portfolio also includes commissioned pieces for various public agencies and corporations, showcasing the widespread impact of his art in both public and corporate collections nationwide. Daryl Thetford's artistic journey continues to evolve, leaving an indelible mark on the contemporary art scene.

Thetford is celebrating his 20th solo exhibition at the Holter Museum of Art in Helena, Montana. The exhibition is currently on display from April 12th to June 21st.
